Engaged Classrooms Open Enrollment Summer Institute 2015
This highly interactive four-day institute offers research based strategies that improve engagement in middle and high school classrooms in order to foster healthy relationships, inspire students to invest in their learning, and support students to tackle the heightened demands of complex academic content and social experiences.
Participants will create a shared vision for systematically integrating high-impact practices that result in effective classroom management, discipline, and instruction to support students to be self-managed, socially and self-aware, and responsible decision makers.
Engaging Schools institutes provide “learn-it-today, use-it-tomorrow” tools and strategies that have immediate relevance and application to the classroom.
In this institute, participants will explore these research based Engaged Classrooms Core Practices:
- Academic Press : Expecting, Insisting, and Supporting Every Student to Achieve
- Relationships and Good Will: Providing Personalized Support
- Making Meaning: Activators and Other Learning Protocols
- Creating a Cohesive Community: Group Procedures, Rituals, and Routines
- Getting Ready to Learn: Attention, Silence, and Directions
- Conferencing: Conferring with Students
- Checking for Understanding: Tools and Processes for Formative Assessment
- Habits of Learning : Supporting Self-Discipline and Self-Regulation
- Managing Disciplinary Incidents: Self-correction, De-escalation, and Problem Solving
- Differentiating Instruction: Choice, Voice, and Relevance
Participants will leave their Engaged Classrooms Institute experience with:
- A personal statement and vision for the ways you will integrate the 10 Core Practices in your classroom
- A list of resources and materials that support a high-performing classroom
- A classroom floor and wall plan that fosters safe, orderly, and engaged learning environments
Participants will also receive copies of two of our core resources: Making Learning Real: Reaching and Engaging All Students in Secondary Classrooms and Getting Classroom Management Right: Guided Discipline and Student Support in Secondary Schools.
Who Should Attend?
District leaders (e.g. director of instruction, district level coaches, director of new teacher induction, etc.) school leaders, middle and high school classroom teachers (new teachers will find this institute particularly beneficial), instructional coaches, department heads, special education coordinators, and other educators.
Dates, Locations and Cost:
Colorado: June 15-18, 2015 at Bill Roberts School in Denver, CO Cancelled
Massachusetts: July 6-9, 2015 on the Lesley University campus in Cambridge
Cost for the 4-day institute is $700.00 per person. This includes breakfast and lunch each day, plus books, and handouts. Overnight accommodations and transportation are not included in the institute price.
Space is limited to 40 participants per institute.

About the Presenters
Carol Miller Lieber got the call to teach as a teenager and never stopped. Exploration of the art, craft, and science of teaching and learning has been her driving passion for over forty years as an educator in the roles of middle and high school teacher, school founder, principal, curriculum writer, and clinical professor in teacher education. She is a longtime professional development consultant, author, and program designer for Engaging Schools.
Michele Tissiere has extensive experience as a classroom teacher and senior administrator in secondary schools. She works collaboratively with district leaders, school leaders, and teachers on systems, structures, and processes for effective change, helping to shape faculty, peer, and classroom cultures in the areas of youth development, student centered teaching and learning, and schoolwide climate and culture. Michele is committed to co-constructing differentiated professional learning opportunities to maximize adults’ capacities, school improvement, and student achievement.
